Do not leave your pearls sitting out on your dresser, window sill, or hanging on a hook where they are exposed to light.

Pearls are fragile and can damage easily if not stored and cared for properly. To clean your pearls, simply wipe them with a soft damp or dry cloth, chamois or microfiber jewelry cloth, to remove any skin oils or dirt. A drop of olive oil on the cloth can be used to help maintain the luster.

Yes, pearls naturally come in a variety of colors including: white, cream, peach, pink, and lavender. Any dark or brightly colored pearls are enhancements from irradiating or dying.

Unlike other types of pearls that grow in saltwater, freshwater cultured pearls are grown in lakes, rivers and streams. Freshwater cultured pearls are more abundant than saltwater pearls and come in greater varieties of shapes and colors.

Cultured pearls or “farmed” pearls, develop just like natural pearls, but are begun with human assistance by planting a small piece of tissue inside a mollusk. The rest of the process is left up to nature as the mussel secrets nacre which accumulates in hard layers around the tissue and eventually forms a pearl. Cultured pearls are obviously more abundant than naturally grown pearls and are therefore more affordable.

The rest of the process is left up to nature as the mussel secrets nacre which accumulates in hard layers around the tissue and eventually form the pearl.

Nacre, also known as “Mother of Pearl,” is a composite of the mineral Aragonite (Calcium Carbonate) and organic protein compounds. It is the hard-lustrous material that gives pearls’ their shape, color and radiance. Nacre, is a mineral substance secreted by mollusks’ as part of a natural healing process in response to a foreign object that makes its way inside its mantle. The nacre then accumulates in hard crystalline layers around the foreign object. As the shiny layers of nacre amass around the object a pearl is formed.

Freshwater cultured pearls are farmed in lakes, rivers and streams in the United States and Asia.

A cultured pearl can take anywhere from 6 months to several years or more to mature.

There is no standardized grading system for pearls, however most credible jewelers in the industry use the well-known “A Grading” classification system. In this system, pearls are classified as either Grade A, AA, or AAA. A pearls grade depends on its type, shape, size, color, surface condition and luster. High grade AAA pearls are nearly perfectly round, with almost no surface blemishes, and high luster. The less round, more blemished and lower luster a pearl has, the lower grade it is. Spirit Pearl carries only Grade AA and AAA freshwater cultured pearls.

Pearls vary in size depending on type of pearl. Freshwater Pearls range anywhere from 4mm to 13mm.
